Substantial double story extension

Brightman Clarke Architects we were appointed to design a series of large extensions to this existing semi-detached property to transform its dated appearance and create a contemporary family home.

Design Process

The adjoining semi-detached home had already been extended extensively to the side and rear it was important that the new extension contained a degree of contrasting materials to break up the mass of the white render on the front elevation.

A new feature gable was introduced using reclaimed bricks to achieve this, breaking up the white render which continues to the side  and beyond.  Subtle architectural features, such as dark grey windows and the large double garage door, are used to create a strong contrast to the main body of the house.

To the rear a single storey extension has been formed to create a large open plan family living room and kitchen. This has been formed with large expanses of glass and bi-folding doors to create a strong relationship with the house and rear garden.

A projecting gable bookends the single storey aspect, with vertical timber cladding to soften and contrast with the crisp white render panels.
