Following a recommendation from one of their friends, our clients opted to appoint JCAD over other Architects in Sheffield to design a contemporary and modern extension to the front of their recently purchased detached home within Totley, Sheffield.

The scheme consisted of some significant internal alterations to the existing layout at ground floor level to create a spacious shower room and new guest bedroom whilst refurbishing the first floor layout whilst a new pitched roofed extension was formed to the front of the property to create a large open plan living kitchen with vaulted ceilings incorporating Velux rooflights to maximise natural day light into the rooms.

Despite being a significant addition to the front of the property we were able to gain planning approval from Sheffield City Council without any complications before producing highly detailed and comprehensive builders works plans and details to liaise with both building control and a Structural Engineer before issuing our final construction drawings package.

Construction works were carried out during the summer / Autumn of 2014 with our clients able to move into their new dream home just before Christmas of that year.


The scheme is broadly detailed below.

Existing Property – A dated Three bedroom detached house in the sought after location of Totley, Sheffield

As Built – Reconfiguration of the ground floor layout to form a new shower room area and additional guest bedroom / study whilst significant refurbishments were carried out to the first floor rooms and a new decorative glass and timber stair case replaced the old and dated one.

In addition to the alterations to the existing structure, a large single storey extension was formed to the front with a vaulted ceiling and rooflights to create an open and airy ambiance to the new living kitchen area.

The completed dwelling comprises the following accommodation:

  • Four bedrooms (including the new guest bedroom at ground floor level)
  • Refurbished Family bathroom at First Floor Level
  • New decorative timber stair with glass infill panels.
